About the role
We are seeking experienced mechanical engineers to evaluate and improve frontier AI models by designing realistic engineering tasks, reviewing model outputs, and applying professional standards across design, analysis, manufacturing, and testing. The role is fully remote and project-based, requires at least 10 hours per week, and is best suited to hands-on practitioners with depth in at least one mechanical engineering specialty, strong written communication, and professional experience using relevant engineering tools.
Key Responsibilities
- Design challenging, realistic mechanical engineering tasks based on your own professional workflows, including scenarios, prompts, drawings, CAD models, load cases, material data, test data, and specifications.
- Create engineering problems such as component sizing calculations, tolerance stack-ups, CAD assembly reviews, thermal or fluids analyses, DFM and DFA reviews, failure analysis reports, and test and validation plans.
- Run engineering tasks through frontier AI models and evaluate the calculations, designs, analyses, and reports they produce against professional standards.
- Compare model outputs generated from identical prompts and files, determine which output performs better, and document the strengths and deficiencies of each.
- Write closed-ended problems with worked solutions, acceptance criteria, and detailed grading rubrics that define the required loads, factors, materials, tolerances, and failure modes.
- Identify and document concrete model failures, including incorrect boundary conditions, unit errors, missed interferences, incomplete tolerance stacks, unsafe factors of safety, fabricated or ignored source files, and off-brief interpretations.
- Contribute across mechanical design, engineering analysis, manufacturing, testing, and validation while reviewing and refining tasks developed by other engineers.
- Use realistic professional files to construct compact tasks or larger multi-day scenarios that reflect the work a competent mechanical engineer would complete.
- Explain technical reasoning clearly and concisely, including why a response passes or fails each acceptance criterion.
- Incorporate expert feedback, revise submitted work when required, and participate in task review and refinement as experience develops.
Required Qualifications
- In-progress Bachelor's degree or higher in mechanical engineering or a related field.
- Hands-on professional mechanical engineering experience and the ability to draw on real-world, day-to-day engineering workflows.
- Current or recent individual-contributor experience performing technical work rather than working solely in a managerial capacity.
- Depth in at least one mechanical engineering area, such as mechanical design and CAD; structures and materials; thermal and fluids; dynamics and controls; or manufacturing.
- Fluency in the tools of your specialty, including relevant CAD, FEA, CFD, MATLAB, or Python tools.
- Strong fundamentals in mechanics of materials, dynamics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and manufacturing processes.
- Full professional or native-level written and spoken English with strong written communication.
- Ability to explain complex professional reasoning clearly and concisely, including why a result is wrong and not only that it is wrong.
- Comfort with ambiguity, meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to verify claims against underlying numbers, sources, or facts.
- Ability to interpret feedback, judge its correctness, apply it independently, and ramp quickly on unfamiliar work from written instructions.
- General familiarity with AI and LLM tools, including experience using tools such as Claude or ChatGPT in professional work.
- Baseline technology literacy, including cloud file tools, browser profiles, desktop applications, everyday file handling, and file conversion and sharing workflows.
- Availability for at least 10 hours per week with consistent availability.
- Based in the United States, Canada, or the UK.
Benefits and Perks
- Fully remote, project-based contract work with flexible scheduling.
- Pay of $40-$125 per hour USD, paid via PayPal on a regular cadence.
- At least 10 hours per week with no weekly maximum; full-time hours are available.
- Multi-day task timers that allow work to be spread across multiple days.
- Access to Claude and ChatGPT through the project, with no personal subscription required.
- Onboarding materials, platform instructions, a dedicated Slack channel, and office hours.
- Opportunities to complete paid projects, receive expert feedback, and review or refine other contributors' tasks.
- Work that applies professional mechanical engineering expertise to the development of trustworthy AI.
