About the role
DataAnnotation is seeking experienced accounting professionals to evaluate frontier AI models on realistic accounting work, including technical accounting, financial reporting, audit, tax, close, reconciliation, and reporting workflows. The Accounting AI Trainer will design professional-grade tasks, assess model outputs against accounting standards, create detailed grading rubrics, and explain errors with clear written reasoning. This fully remote, project-based contract offers flexible scheduling, a minimum commitment of 10 hours per week, and compensation of $40-$125 USD per hour.
Key Responsibilities
- Design challenging, realistic accounting tasks based on professional experience, including scenarios, prompts, and supporting files such as trial balances, schedules, source documents, correspondence, and prior-year workpapers.
- Run accounting tasks through frontier AI models and evaluate the resulting workpapers, memos, schedules, reconciliations, and other deliverables against professional standards.
- Compare multiple model outputs using identical prompts and files, determine which output performed better, and document the strengths and deficiencies of each response.
- Create detailed grading rubrics that define correct treatments, amounts, disclosures, supporting evidence, and other requirements for an acceptable deliverable.
- Identify and document concrete model failures, including misapplied standards, numbers that do not tie, unsupported conclusions, fabricated or ignored source documents, missed disclosures, and off-brief interpretations.
- Contribute expertise across audit, technical accounting, tax, close, consolidation, and financial reporting workflows.
- Review and refine tasks created by other accounting experts and provide evidence-based feedback on task quality and model performance.
- Use clear written reasoning to explain why an accounting conclusion or model response is correct, incomplete, unsupported, or incorrect.
Required Qualifications
- In-progress Bachelor's degree or higher in accounting, finance, or a related field.
- Depth in at least one accounting area, including audit and assurance; technical accounting and financial reporting; US GAAP and/or IFRS; tax; controllership; close and consolidation; cost and managerial accounting; internal audit and SOX; or forensic accounting.
- Working understanding of several additional accounting areas and the workflows they involve.
- Practitioner-level spreadsheet capability, including building and checking schedules, reconciliations, and roll forwards.
- Current or recent hands-on individual contributor experience rather than experience solely in a managerial capacity.
- Ability to create realistic scenarios from day-to-day accounting workflows and assess whether AI systems can complete the work correctly.
- Full professional or native-level written and spoken English, with the ability to explain complex professional reasoning clearly and concisely.
- Comfort with ambiguity, strong attention to detail, and the ability to verify documents against underlying numbers, sources, and facts.
- Ability to interpret feedback, determine which feedback is correct, apply it independently, and ramp quickly on unfamiliar work from written instructions.
- General familiarity with AI and LLM tools, including the ability to distinguish well-reasoned answers from plausible but incorrect responses.
- Baseline technology literacy, including cloud file tools, browser profile management, desktop app installation, and everyday file handling.
- Availability for at least 10 hours per week, with no weekly maximum.
- Based in the United States, Canada, or the UK.
