About the role
The Hardware Engineer - AI Trainer will use practical expertise in circuit, board-level, and system engineering to create and evaluate realistic hardware problems for frontier AI models. The role requires at least 3 years of industry experience, hands-on hardware design and debugging experience, fluency with simulation and engineering tools, strong technical writing, and availability for at least 10 hours per week. This is fully remote, project-based contract work available to eligible professionals in the United States, Canada, the UK, Australia, Ireland, or New Zealand.
Key Responsibilities
- Design challenging and realistic hardware engineering problems based on practical experience, including circuit specifications, power stage sizing, board layout considerations, and hardware debugging scenarios.
- Author supporting professional files for evaluation tasks, including schematics, board files, datasheets, simulation setups, measurement data, and design calculations.
- Run hardware engineering problems through frontier AI models and evaluate the outputs against professional engineering standards.
- Compare two model versions using identical prompts, determine which model performed better, and document the strengths and shortcomings of each.
- Critique model-generated schematics, component selections, topologies, and calculations.
- Write detailed technical rationale explaining why an answer is correct, incomplete, or incorrect.
- Identify and document concrete model failures with evidence, including wrong assumptions, unphysical results, invalid topologies, misread schematics, fabricated datasheet values, and off-brief interpretations.
- Contribute domain expertise across relevant hardware areas, including analog/mixed-signal engineering, power electronics, hardware debugging, and board bring-up.
Required Qualifications
- At least 3 years of industry experience in hardware design, circuit engineering, or related fields.
- Current or recent experience performing technical work as an individual contributor.
- Background in electrical engineering, electronics engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- An in-progress Bachelor's degree or higher.
- Hands-on experience with hardware design, hardware debugging, board bring-up, and technical workflows.
- Fluency with simulation and engineering tools, including schematic capture, PCB tools, SPICE, and lab instruments.
- Strong written communication and the ability to articulate exactly why an answer is wrong, not just that it is wrong.
- Professional or native-level English.
- General familiarity with AI and LLM tools, or the ability to learn them quickly.
- Location in the United States, Canada, the UK, Australia, Ireland, or New Zealand.
- Availability for at least 10 hours per week.
Benefits and Perks
- Ultimate Flexibility: Fully remote, project-based contract work with the ability to choose which projects to work on and when.
- Competitive Pay: $40–$120 per hour USD, with bonus rates available on some projects.
- No Overhead: Access to Claude and ChatGPT is provided, so personal subscriptions are not required.
- Work-Life Balance: Flexible multi-day task timers, no shift work, and no weekly maximums after the 10-hour minimum.
